Corely Street Park Dedication, April 19

On Saturday April 19, 2008 between 1:00pm-2:00pm there will be a confederate ceremony being held at the Corley Street Park. The ceremony will conclude with the firing of replica rifles and replica cannon (non-projectile type).

This notice is to make you aware of the rifle and cannon firing and ask you not to be alarmed by the loud noise. Lexington Police Department, Lexington Fire Department, and Lexington Dispatch have all be made aware of the ceremony occuring.

Vehicle Break-in Suspect

The Lexington Police Department is asking for help in identifying the person(s) responsible for several vehicle break-ins during the last week. A composite sketch of a possible suspect is found in the press release.

Items being taken include laptop computers, GPS devices, iPods, and other electronic goods. According to the victims, all of the items taken were in plain view. The subjects carrying out these larcenies are looking for unlocked vehicles but will smash windows to gain entry if needed.

The Lexington Police Department is asking citizens to remember to remove all valuables from vehicles parked outside and to report any suspicous activity to 9-1-1.

 

Toys for Tots Campaign

The Lexington Police Department is once again helping to make Christmas brighter for local children by serving as a Toys for Tots collection point this season.

From now through December 19th you may drop-off a new, unwrapped toy at the Police Department’s offices in the Lexington Municipal Complex at 111 Maiden Lane (behind the Old Court House). All toys collected will go to the Midlands Toys for Tots Campaign.

We will also be having special collection dates at local businesses with area radio and television personalities assisting in the campaign. Watch for more information to be released at a later date as we promote these special drop-off points.

Third Annual Fall Festival

On Otober 25, 2007 between 6:00pm & 9:00pm the Town of Lexington Police Department will sponsor its annual Fall Festival. Held at the Town Hall complex on Maiden Ln, children and adults will enjoy food, games, a haunted house, and other fun activities. Cost is $5 per person and $15 maximum per family.

Road Closure Notice - Fort Street on August 11

Fort Street, which runs between the new Lexington County Court House and Lexington United Methodist Church, will be closed on Saturday, August 11, 2007. The closure is for pedestrian safety during a benefit being held for baby Maggie Caffrey from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm. The benefit is being hosted by the Lexington United Methodist Church and Lexington School District One. During this time, Fort Street will be closed from East Main St (US 1) to South Lake Drive (SC 6).

National Night Out

The Town of Lexington Police Department encourages residents to turn on their porch lights on Tuesday, August 7. As part of the National Night Out program, members of the Department will be available to participate in neighborhood meetings or functions as part of this program.

National Night Out is an opportunity for neighborhoods across the country to turn on their porch lights, go outside and meet their neighbors. National Night Out promotes crime prevention, the prevention of drugs, strengthens neighborhood spirit and police/community relations. It is an opportunity for neighborhoods to let criminals know that they are organized to ensure the safety and security of their neighborhoods.

"Shattered Dreams" Program at Lexington Middle School

The Lexington Police Department and Lexington 1 School District are teaming up to present a re-enactment of a DUI traffic accident. As part of the "Shattered Dreams" program, which begins at 10:30 am on April 26, the accident and its effects on the community will be discussed.

 

Reserve Officer Program Openings

The Lexington Police Department is currently accepting applications for the Reserve Officer program. Applicants must be twenty-one years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent and a S.C. Driver's License. Must be in good health and able to meet the Lexington Police Department's physical fitness requirements, and the requirements of the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy.

Applications may be obtained from the Public Safety Building at 111 Maiden Lane or our website. All applications must be submitted by March 31, 2007, to Chief Terrence Green , P.O. Box 397, Lexington, SC 29071.

 

Spring 2007 Citizen's Academy from March 6 to May 8

The Lexington Police Department is currently seeking applicants for the Citizen’s Police Academy. The purpose of The Citizen’s Police Academy is to provide an opportunity for citizens to learn more about police operations and to build a stronger relationship between the community and the department. The academy will run for ten weeks starting March 6, 2007 until May 8, 2007 on Tuesday nights (no meeting on April 3) between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The classes will be held at the Lexington Police Department’s training facility with some off site locations. The course will be administered by police department personnel. The curriculum includes an overview of police operations and organization, introduction to community oriented policing, patrol functions, criminal investigations, narcotics and many other aspects of the department. Qualified applicants must be twenty one years of age, reside or work in the Town of Lexington and successfully submit to a background check to be completed by the department. Free Child Safety Seat Checks on Wednesday, February 14

On Wednesday, February 14 from 1 pm until 5 pm, officers from the Lexington Police Department will be available in the Wal-Mart shopping center on Sunset Blvd (US 378) to check the installation of your child safety seats. Officers from the Department's Community Action Team who are specially trained in safety seat installation will be on hand to check, and if necessary adjust, the installation of your child safety seats. Parents or those who are expecting are encouraged to come by for this free, quick check.

On Friday, February 4, 2007 the Town of Lexington Police Department will be conducting Public Safety Check Points within the Town of Lexington. Officers will also be out in force monitoring Public School Zones.

Officers will be looking for Impaired Drivers, Driving Under Suspension, and Operating Uninsured Drivers. Officers will also increase enforcement in School Zones within the Town. Site Assessment for Re-Accreditation

The Town of Lexington Police Department has applied to undergo on-site assessment as part of a program to maintain state accreditation by verifying that it meets professional standards.

Administered by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc., the accreditation program requires agencies to comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and procedures, administration, operations, and support services.
