February 2012

As most of you may know, the top priority for our Town is addressing the severe traffic congestion we experience daily as we go about our travels.

Since my election as your Mayor in 2004, we as a Council and staff, along with SCDOT, have worked diligently on our Unified Traffic Improvement Plan. During this seven year period, we have acquired both state and federal dollars totaling over 14.5 million. This has not been easy! For three years, we have had more than enough funding needed to complete Phase I (Columbia Avenue at Park Road, W. Main St., and W. Butler St.). Funding is not the issue any longer - SCDOT has set aside and programmed this project.

We are puzzled and perplexed as to why the Columbia Ave. project has now been delayed another year by SCDOT. It has been moved from November 2011 to November 2012. Roadway improvements in our Town are critical in helping relieve congestion along this corridor. It is essential to commerce, your safety and the quality of life. We all enjoy living here in Lexington. Rest assured, your Town leaders will continue to press SCDOT to move forward with our project much sooner than November. I will keep you posted on our efforts and progress in attempting to get this resolved.

This is just one of the many initiatives that I will discuss during the State of the Town Address. Please join me on Monday, February 6 in Council Chambers at 6:30pm. You may also watch live on Ch. 2, view the streaming video at www.lexsc.com or listen locally on 107.9 WLXM.
